So my best friend called me and said, "Dude, your birthday's coming and Steely Dan's on the Rocks the night before. We're there!"
I always liked Steely Dan, but never saw them in my 35 plus years of concert attending and I said to myself, "Why not, Steely Dan?" I knew a lot of their songs and they were the one 70's band I dug that I never ever saw live. And what better place could I enjoy them than at Red Rocks?
So I replied, "Sure, it's sold out but maybe we'll get lucky."
At Red Rocks, they screen people at the base before before they let you up the mountain. You can't get near the amphitheater entrance without a ticket. But DG and I knew a back way in to the amphitheater from the road. After all, Red Rocks is part of a park and there are lots of dirt roads that are quite passable. We ended parking about 100 feet from the entrance with a cooler of sandwiches and cold beers and some cash money in our pockets. Face value on the tickets was $90 for the show and we agreed that we would each pay no more than $30 each to get in. We figured that someone would have an extra ticket or two, maybe a little disappointed that their friend couldn't make it and we could take that extra ticket off their hands so it wouldn't be a total loss. Typically, by the time a person is eager to get in they are amenable to price negotiation. DG and I had to be willing to walk away if we could not find a willing seller. With our mission protocols understood, it was time to enjoy a nice Summer night and see what happens. And if I was not meant to see Steely Dan then I would head on home or something, I live about 30 minutes away so it was no big deal. DG and I had a beer and a sandwich and watched the crowd start to amble towards the entrance.
I saw a group of people about 10 feet away tailgating and they were wishing a fellow Happy Birthday and popping the corks off of some champagne bottles. Well, since it was going to be my birthday in about 5 hours I walked over and wished my Cancer Bro a Happy Birthday too. Some nice folks they were, we chatted for a few minutes and then I climbed a few rocks to get some privacy and answer the call of nature.
With the call of Nature now answered, I scrambled back down the rocks towards my friend, DG, who was talking to the "Birthday Boy" aka BB and everyone was smiling. When I got down there, DG handed me a ticket, 23rd row. Now I was smiling. DG explained that after I split for my...err...watering of the cactus, he went over to wish BB a Happy Birthday too. And DG mentioned to these folks that we were looking for tickets. Well, imagine DG's surprise when BB whipped out a pair of tickets and gave them to DG for nothing. BB had 6 tickets that were comped to him and had a pair he wasn't using. BB said to take them and not worry about money, that my seeing Steely Dan was meant to be and to have a great Birthday memory.

Thank you, BigC, if I do nothing else today, I can still say I had an awesome birthday experience. I love the days when I can't lose. Makes up for the ones when I got clobbered.

Why thank you, Miss Lou, the festivities are off to a roaring start. After morning coffee, it was all I could do to stop laughing. If I had not lived the experience I just went through I don't think I would believe it. But whenever I wanted to get into a concert, I always found a way. I never went home. I had to be ready to go home if all attempts failed, but I always got in. And last night was the best score of all.
Tonight I got Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks at a small club, another late night....I'll sleep all weekend...

You know my Grand-daddy was right, Secret, the secret to life is showing up. If I don't show then how will I know how it all turns out.
Thanks for the Birthday wishes...
There is no place like Red Rocks. Many fine venues out there all over this World, but a night on the Rocks is really special and I have been very lucky to be part of the crowd for so many fun shows. The energy I feel personally is off the charts whenever I am there. Hope you can make it someday!
Why thank you for the kind Birthday wishes, June. May you enjoy the blessings of another beautiful day today, there's always great hope that arrives with each sunrise I think. Thank you for touching many Hearts!

I always enjoy July, Ron, a time of renewal for me. Many exciting things out there in Life, opportunities to make a difference, have some fun and replenish the Spirit.

Always a thrill whenever you stop by, Miss Six.
Thanks for remembering me and know that I am very happy that you, 5' 9" Brunette and your Parents are healthy and thriving. May the positive energy keep rolling your way and I'll be blowing some kisses to the wind for you. Watch out for that Western breeze!

You know, chanda, the world is my oyster, especially in the months without "r"s in them. My neighbor is a July 19 baby. Woogie was born on or around July 16. My bud DG was born on 7/11 and we partied up in Boulder where he lives last weekend and I met someone nice up there and she was born on July 2. So it's been a Moon Child multi-weekend extravaganza...

Why thanks for the Birthday wishes, Daisy. And yes, it was great to see Fagen on the keys and Becker on guitar. The whole band was tight and crisp. A very fine Birthday's Eve indeed!

I still laugh everyday when I think about it, WP. It goes to show the power of positive thinking. A couple of our friends said we would never get in. Well, not only did we, but we got comped....
This is my version of winning the lottery I guess...

Remember that, Prank? Back in the 80's or something, remember, Steely Dan was way too tight and no one was very very Happy?
Mr. Happy!
