Some buddies and I got to see Gov't Mule last Thursday night and it was one very fine evening. Some great covers of James Brown, Humble Pie, The Allman Brothers and many fine originals were performed. I am close to getting a recording of this show in my hands very soon. In the meantime, here's a live sample of one of my favorite Tom Waits tunes performed by Gov't Mule in Atlanta on April 12, 1996 for your listening pleasure.
Going Out West
(Lyrics by Tom Waits/K. Brennan)
Well I'm goin' out west
Where the wind blows tall
'Cause Tony Franciosa
Used to date my Ma
They got some money out there
They're giving it away
I'm gonna do what I want
Do what I want
And I'm gonna get paid
Little brown sausages
Lying in the sand
I ain't no extra baby
I'm a leading man
Well my parole officer
Will be proud of me
With my Olds 88
And the devil on a leash
My Olds 88
And the devil on a leash
Well I know karate, Voodoo too
I'm gonna make myself available to you
I don't need no make up
I got real scars
I got hair on my chest
I look good without a shirt
Well I don't lose my composure
In a high speed chase
Well my friends think I'm ugly
I got a masculine face
I got some dragstrip courage
I can really drive a bed
I'm gonna change my name
To Hannibal or maybe
Just Rex
Change my name to Hannibal
Or maybe just Rex
I'm gonna drive all night
Take some speed
I'm gonna wait for the Sun
To shine down on me
I cut a hole in my roof
In the shape of a heart
And I'm goin' out West
Where they'll appreciate me
Goin' out West
Goin' out West
Photos are from an article in the Daily Mail I read today about the New Earth. You can read it too by clicking here.
Did you hear they found the New Earth?
A fresh World where we can laugh and play in
Maybe a chance for us to start over
And not trash the place for what it's worth
I wonder how that New Earth Sun will feel?
Let's hope the rays won't burn out our eyes
Do you think that you'll ever get to go
And find New Earth dust stuck on your heel?
They say New Earth has lots of gravity
With years that take less than a fortnight
That it's not too hot or way too cold
This seems to be a most remarkable discovery
I hope we get to go and see this New Earth
It's about time we had another option
Since we pretty much wrecked the Earth we got
A second chance, another go, a chance for rebirth
April has seemed like a long month, longer than most since I have been in classes most of April updating and expanding my repertoire on Cisco internetworking devices. Really good geeky stuff on routing traffic between computers and networks of computers. I am loving it but a fella has to get out some on the weekends to stay balanced. Plus I always enjoy a ride up the canyon nearby called the south St. Vrain Canyon so I brought my camera and took some pictures along the way. I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I had being in the great wide open the past few weekends.
Just about 25 minutes from Base Camp Prank we are.
The mighty St. Vrain River.
The jagged canyon walls.
Caught it all on a sunny day.
The sunlight above 6600 feet is amazing. So different than at sea level.
The "Twin Sisters" peaking over the horizon where I was standing at 7400 feet elevation.
I was driving along thinking about where I would establish the 'New' Prankster's Palace when I spied this little handyman's dream out of the corner of my eye.
I decided to take a little closer look. The price was right but I took a pass because there was no high speed internet available.
I ended up the day right here just outside the Boulder, CO city limits. There was maybe 2 or 3 climbers on those rocks when I got there. The loop from the south St. Vrain brings you to Boulder Canyon near Nederland and it's a great ride. I hope you all can make it up here sometime and see it for yourself.
My mind soars it does travel
So very far when I awake
Wishing the dreams would never leave
Some folks say that my sanity
It never returns which makes me
Smile to hear for they may
Be right or maybe they don't
Know what it is to be
A happy wanderer with no fear
Of what shall be or not
For if I take no chances
Afraid to truly put it on
The line then how can I
Know what I can see or
Find deep inside that I didn't
Know could exist inside of me
So I say to you now
My dear friend never fear for
You have something uniquely yours alone
That no one can ever take
Away from you in this World
Do not fret as you go
About your day because you are
Loved and cherished and so bright
You have courage like the Lion
Can do good things for all
Do not cower for you will
Be so much more than alright
