The Paradox of the Prankster

From The Digital Vaults -- This Is Why I Dig Neil Young

Cortez The Killer ~ Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Live in London, UK ~ 31 March 1976

He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
In that palace in the sun.

On the shore lay Montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls

In his halls he often wondered
With the secrets of the worlds.

And his subjects gathered 'round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see.

And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on.

Hate was just a legend
And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones.

They carried them to the flatlands
And they died along the way
But they built up with their bare hands
What we still can't do today.

And I know she's living there
And she loves me to this day
I still can't remember when
Or how I lost my way.

He came dancing across the water
Cortez, Cortez
What a killer.

My Pre-Wednesday Mantra -- Headline News Edition

To view "Sunday Morning" by Eastman Johnson in higher definition click here.

House prices falling
At record rates
Judge OKs extradition
Of Noriega to France
Foreign crews battle
Widespread Greek blazes
Trapped miners survive
On a coal and urine diet
Miss Teen South Carolina
Gets second chance

How does this day
Differ much from the last
The headlines keep coming
We keep repeating the past
Numbness sets in and
My brain locks up
All this information
Such little wisdom
Where ten second clips
Pass for deep discussion

China defends exports
Blames foreign designers
Taliban releases
Nineteen more captives
Rain drenches Wisconsin
Forcing evacuations
Diaper free baby fad
Swells despite critics
Poverty rate declines
Links to obesity

Does any of this suggest
That I don't care
No, all that I'm saying
I only got so much
Light in my day
My attention it wanders
My brain's overloaded
With nothing but headlines
That look all the same
And mean nothing 'til next time

Iraq blackouts worsen
Fueling anger
Senator busted in mens room
At Minnesota airport
New sentence hearing
For Wal-Mart exec
Britney accused of
Child dental abuse
Mississippi ranked
Fattest state in the nation

My Tuesday Mantra -- Those Voices Weren't Just In My Head, Your Honor Edition

Derived from a design by A. Kitaoka

I was finally doing nothing
Had nowhere to go
And no one to see
Life sure seemed fine

I heard the cell ring
Picked it right up
Something I don't do often
A quirk of mine

The voice on the line
Not familiar to me
Spoke of echoes from yesteryears
From some other time

You know I was puzzled
I didn't hang up
Still had no clue and
That voice was sublime

My brain it so tried
To sort this out
When that voice did shout
I'm blowing your mind

Now that voice was correct
My mind's long gone
From those echoes of yesteryears
From some other time

I'll always cherish the days
I spent with those
Who showed me such Love
They sure were kind

I face this World forward
Look toward the Sun
The clock keeps on ticking
Just can't fall behind

Then the voice started fading
I'm not sure why
No more echoes from yesteryears
Of some other time

My Weekend Mantra -- Lefty's Feeling Congenial Edition

Well come on over
You're always welcome
Sorry that I'm
A bit out of the way

But I know once
We get you out here
A very good time
Will be had by all

Took me longer
Than I ever thought
To get the new Palace
Set up and ready to go

And I can't honestly
Say that it's all done
But there's no stress
No fussing or a mess

Been close to a year
Since I felt at home
Now I feel it deeply
Even got a telephone

Cricket's chirping
Their evening song dancing
In the Western breeze cool
Blowing sweet and soft

Come and play up here at 5420
Higher than I ever lived before
Laughing and singing
As the Coyotes howl
